Thailand Passport & Visa Photo Requirements (USA)

Thai passport renewal from the US is different from most country pages: the passport photo is normally captured on-site during a biometric appointment. Thai eVisa applicants upload documents online through the official stickerless eVisa portal.

On-Site Capture

For a normal Thai e-passport renewal, do not assume a US 2×2 print is useful. The official process captures the passport image during biometrics.

Avoid Colored Contacts

The Embassy warns against colored contact lenses because the appointment includes iris or retinal scan.

Stickerless eVisa

Visa applicants use thaievisa.go.th. Standard applicants do not mail passports or printed documents to the Embassy.

Renewing a Thai Passport from the US

Thai citizens schedule an appointment and appear in person at the Thai mission or mobile consular event. At Washington DC, the Embassy's consular office is at 2300 Kalorama Road NW. Bring your appointment confirmation, Thai ID card, current passport, completed application, and payment by money order or cashier's check. If you want the passport mailed back, bring the listed cash postage amount.

Processing is generally four to six weeks. The passport fee is $37 for a 5-year e-passport or $55 for a 10-year e-passport, subject to the Embassy's current fee schedule. Cash, personal checks, and credit cards are not accepted for the passport fee.

Thai eVisa and US Travelers

US citizens are generally eligible for Thailand's visa exemption for short tourism or eligible short business stays. Travelers who need a longer stay or a specific visa category apply through the official Thai eVisa portal. The Royal Thai Embassy has used a stickerless eVisa system since 2021, so standard applicants do not mail passports or supporting documents to the Embassy.

The eVisa process includes online uploads such as a passport page and recent portrait. Official public pages checked for this batch did not expose one stable photo pixel table outside the application flow, so follow the portal's live validation. PassportPhotoFactory can help prepare a clean, current, front-facing digital image, but the final category-specific upload checks belong to the official portal.

Common Delay Reasons

Thai passport appointments can be delayed when an applicant lacks the required Thai ID, current passport, appointment confirmation, or proper payment method. Colored contact lenses can interfere with the iris/retinal scan. eVisa applicants often run into delays from name mismatches, wrong passport expiration data, confusing zero with letter O, choosing the wrong visa category, or applying outside the recommended travel window.

4×6 Print Hack: When It Helps

For Thai passport renewal, a 4×6 print sheet is normally not the answer because the mission captures the passport photo at the appointment. For Thai eVisa or other Thai document categories that request an uploaded portrait, a clean digital file is more useful than prints. If a specific consulate or mobile event later asks you to bring printed photos, you can place multiple compliant copies on a standard 4×6 sheet and print it cheaply at a US drugstore.
