India Visa, OCI & Indian Passport Photo Requirements (USA)

Different Indian documents have different photo rules. The e-Visa bans spectacles. The regular visa caps files at 300 KB. VFS wants a pure white background. Here's exactly what each one needs.

eVisa / OCI / Passport ready No spectacles verified 4×6 print template included

#1 Rejection Reason

eVisa "Without spectacles" — glasses are explicitly banned. Don't reuse old studio photos.
Regular Visa File too large — max 300 KB (not 1 MB like eVisa).
VFS Passport Background not pure white — "off-white" walls get rejected.
OCI Poor photo/signature upload quality — leading cause of returns.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The eVisa instructions explicitly state the photo must be "without spectacles." This is the single most common rejection reason for e-Visa photo uploads.

Similar framing, but the eVisa explicitly bans spectacles and enforces a specific file-size window (10 KB–1 MB) with a mandatory square aspect ratio. You also need to upload a passport bio page scan separately.

The biggest difference is file size: eVisa allows up to 1 MB, while the regular visa portal caps at 300 KB. Both require JPEG, square format. eVisa explicitly bans spectacles; regular visa doesn't explicitly ban them but glare can fail review.

For Indian passport photos via VFS in the US, Indian-mission guidance states babies under one year do not have to have eyes open. For e-Visa, the written rule is "eyes open" — try for eyes open but prioritize a clean, well-lit image.

US $275 per applicant for OCI registration at Indian missions abroad, plus ICWF fee and VFS service fee. You also need proof of renunciation/surrender if you were a former Indian passport holder.

3.5 cm × 2.5 cm — this is NOT the same as a 2×2 inch passport photo. White background, color photo. Don't use a passport photo template for PAN.

Yes. UIDAI says the 182-day residency condition is not mandatory for NRIs with a valid Indian passport. OCI holders can also enroll as "Resident Foreign National." Photos are captured live at an enrolment center — you don't bring prints.
